Cory Johnson
Chair, ISD 196 School Board · Agile Product Coach
Cory Johnson has spent his career in public service and in solving complicated problems. He served fourteen years as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard — work that runs on the same fundamentals good governance does: get the facts right, make the call with incomplete information, own the outcome. That pull toward service is what led him to run for his local school board.
He has served on the board of Independent School District 196 — Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan — since 2020, and serves as its chair. He is a trustee of the Minnesota School Boards Association Insurance Trust and a past District Director for the MSBA, which means he has seen governance from more than one board table.
By day, Cory is an Agile Product Coach at Travelers, where he’s spent more than fifteen years and now focuses on strategic planning and executive coaching. The short version of the job: he teaches people how to solve complex problems. He holds a Master’s of Applied Science from the University of Denver and a BA in Organizational Management from Concordia University–St. Paul.
In his words
Why I built BoardOps
BoardOps came out of the gap between those two roles. As board chair, Cory kept hitting the same kind of problem. How do you keep a superintendent evaluation on track across an entire year? What do you actually do when a board seat goes vacant mid-term? These are solved problems in theory — statute and policy describe what’s supposed to happen — but in practice every board rebuilds the process from scratch, usually in a spreadsheet, usually under time pressure.
So he built the processes and the tools his own board needed. BoardOps is those tools, made available to every other board.
